The I-4 gas engine has a number of innovative features including the late intake valve closing (iVCT), advancements in processor technology, which results in seamless transitions from electric to gasoline.

The groundbreaking electric motor can push the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid up to 47 MPH in Electric Vehicle mode. When more power is needed, in situations like hill climbing or quick acceleration, the gasoline counterpart kicks in to provide an extra boost.
